MENA — The Pottsville Apaches defeated the Mena Bearcats 34-22 on Friday at Randall Whorton Field.
The Apaches drew first blood with 3:05 left in the half when Drew Rust crossed the goal line on a 6-yard run. Emiliano Torres added the PAT to make it 7-0.
Mena answered with a 35-yard touchdown pass to tie the game with 1:34 left in the half.
Konner Carpenter connected with Elijah Bradley on a 45-yard touchdown strike to put Pottsville up 14-7 with 44 seconds left in the half, but Mena added a 37-yard field goal with no time left on the clock to make it 14-10 at halftime.
WIth 4:29 left in the third quarter, Ben Jones put Pottsville up 21-10 on a 2-yard rush, and with 3:11 in the third, Drew Rust scored his second touchdown on a 2-yard run to make it 28-10.
Early in the fourth quarter, Torres scored on a 2-yard run to put Pottsville up 24-10.
Mena added two more touchdowns before the end of regulation to pull within 34-22.
Carpenter finished the game 8-of-12 for 117 yards passing and a touchdown. Elijah Bradley had 74 yards on four passes and a touchdown.
Rust led the show on the ground with 89 rushing yards on 19 carries for two touchdowns. Torres had 73 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown.
The Apaches improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the 4A-4 Conference with the win.
They host Waldron on Friday at John Needham Stadium.
